The Big Doppler Effect

The night sky here in the city was disappointing. The glare of the street lights dimmed the twinkle of the stars, so much so that it was literally, an enveloping blanket of darkness. It was nowhere like the night-sky back home. Under the stars, beyond the stars where the new-forged meteors glow- dust of the stars was under our feet, glitter of stars hung like christmas bulbs above.

Wish upon a falling star- she closed her eyes and gently bowed her head. She never once questioned the mythology behind this fallacy. She thought of drifting nights in the Georgia pines, coonskin drums and jubilee banjo. Weaving a wish and a weariness together, she hoped that this could go on forever..and uttered a silent prayer. for him, and for her.

She wished she could see into the future, just like how astronomers could make predictions with constellations. She wished she could figure out the red shift puzzle; she knew that the answer lies somewhere within the spectrography. The Andromeda above shifted, faded, and reformed into a Cygnus. The analogy of the ugly duckling blooming into a beautiful swan vaguely resonated. She began forming asterisms in the back of her mind...and began to dream of beautiful things to come.
